An Unfortunate First

This will be another semi-boring post, but being a first I wanted to document it.

Yesterday I noticed that Miles' spit up was a little more mucusy than normal and that he sounded a little raspy. Well, when he woke up this morning he had a horrible cough and when he talks it sounds more like a growl than a coo. He has kept a pretty good disposition, but has been grumpier than normal and hasn't napped well at all. Luckily there is no fever or weazing, which brings a little comfort.
I called the ped office and they said there is nothing to do for kids as young as Miles, just wait and see if it gets worse. That is just down right mean advice for a new mom :(.

If any of you seasoned mothers have any helpful hints please send them my way.

put a semi-flat pillow or a folded up blanket under the head of his crib mattress to keep his head elevated and help it drain. Saline sprays are great, use that, and then use the blue sucker outer thingy you got at the hospital to keep his nose clear. Use a humidifier, and give him tylenol if he acts like it is bugging him alot, especially at night to help him sleep better. I would say motrin because that's better for swelling (like if his sinuses are swollen from the mucus) but I don't think babies can have motrin till 6 months. Good luck. He'll get enough of these in his life that it will all be second nature to you. My kids had one cold or another and sinus infections all winter. Love ya!! Good job keeping him away from the germs for almost 4 months!!

That's too bad Sarah! Good luck with sick baby Miles. He sure is cute even if he is sick!

Oh I hate those nasty colds!! It is soooo mean that there is nothing you can do for them. With all the technology we have they should seriously come up with something!! A humidifier has really been the only thing that has helped for us when ours have colds and Vicks Vapor Rub.

....About the scrapbooking, I would love to share my tips with you!! It would be so fun!! I actually just took a scrapbooking class at Bridgerland and I am finishing it up this week. We should get together and I will show you how to do all the fun tricks. It is not hard at all but beware, it is addicting!! Good luck with little Miles. I hope he pulls out of this cold soon for your sake and his!!

I have done the pillow thing under the mattress too Sarah and it does help. Also, a vaporizer to keep the air moist. OH and my sister in law suggested once to put the vapor rub on thier feet then put socks on of course, the vapor is int the air but far enough away from thier little faces, we also did this with Jace, don't know if it helped, though it sure made me feel better knowing I was trying what I could "/
It does suck there isn't much you can do for the little ones.
So sorry, I hope he gets better fast!

Good luck! I hate it when the little ones get sick like that. Looks like you got some good advice thought. I do think that the vapor rub on the feet worked. My dad actually tried it when he had a cough and he said it helped and it made his feet warm all night.

Love you Sarah, don't worry you are doing great. (I say don't worry but I have discovered since becoming a mother that being a worry wart comes with the calling.)

Ditto on all the comments. The pillow really will help, and the vaporizer is a must. If it's a tight cough at night, wrap him up tightly in a blanket and take him out in the cold night air. If he is stuffy turn on the shower and fill the bathroom with steam. The moisture will help him. Saline drops can be great too if he has a hard time. Good luck. You are a great mom, and he's lucky to have you.
