Liam's Story

Our little Liam sure surprised us all.
After being dilated to a 3 and 75% effaced for almost 3 weeks I had given up any hope of going into labor on my own. I was scheduled to be induced on July 5th and had everything planned out.

On the morning of July 3rd I noted a clear, thin, white discharge. I didn't think anything of it and brushed it off as one of the weird things that happens during pregnancy.  By mid afternoon I was annoyed with this increase in discharge, but still didn't think anything of it.  Then at 8:00 pm I had a smallish gush.  This seemed weird and all of a sudden I remember thinking, "Oh, I wonder if my water broke and I've been slowly leaking all day."

After a quick phone call to my mom to see what she thought it was decided that I better call Labor and Delivery to see what they had to say.  The nurse I spoke to didn't sound overly convinced that it was my water, but said it was better to check and be sent home than to walk around with a broken bag of water.

So I quickly called Gabe at work to tell him that I think my water broke and that I was going to go into L&D to have it checked out. I asked him to meet me there, even though they were probably going to send us home. We decided that since I was probably getting excited over nothing that we would just take Miles with us. I mean, they were gonna send us home anyway so why bug the neighbors.

At 9:00 pm we finally got to the hospital. After being checked (still only dilated to a 3) and swabbed to determine if my water had actually broken we sat around and waited for the results. It seemed like forever! At about 10:15 the results were in. My water had broken.

Now what? We're already at the hospital, but since I was so sure that they were gonna send us home we had brought Miles with us and I didn't even think to grab our bags.  We quickly called our parents to tell them that we were having a baby and to tell my mom to head on down to watch Miles.  Then we had to call and wake up our neighbors and ask them if we could bring Miles over until my mom could get here.

Gabe quickly gathered up Miles and jotted down a list of the things he needed to bring back with him and then headed back to Bountiful (about a 30 min drive).  Finally after running home, making sure Miles was settled and grabbing what he thought we needed Gabe made it back to St Mark's at about 11:50 pm.

According to the monitor I was having contractions, but I wasn't aware of them. At around 12:30 I started to notice them a little, but by 1:00 am the nurse told us they had slowed considerably. From about 1:00-2:00 am Gabe and I were wondering the halls of St Mark's hoping to get my contractions to pick up again. Unfortunately it didn't work. Around 2:00 am I as started on pitocin. It was slow moving from here.
by this point I still hadn't dilated anymore and my contractions were pathetic.

At 4:00 am I was checked again and only dilated to a 4. They upped my pitocin drip and my contractions seemed to pick up for a little while, but then slowed again.  By 6:00 am my pitocin was increased again and once again my contractions increased, but then slowed. This trend went on until about 8:00 am when little Liam did a jump and the rest of my water burst. There was the explosive gush I was expecting. From that moment my contractions intensified to the point that I was asking for my epidural. However, that was a mistake. The anesthesiologist had to stick me twice because he drew blood the first time and then when it was all over my thighs and abdomen were the only things that appeared to be numb, everything in between still had feeling. Hmm can we say pointless?

Anyway, at about 9:15 I told the nurse that I needed to push. She seemed surprised and checked me. Then she said with surprise, "Oh, yes your baby's head is right here." I was then instructed not to push and that my doctor had been notified and was on her way. So for about 30 minutes I painfully resisted the urge to push this baby out of me every few minutes. My doctor arrived and evaluated the situation, informed us that baby was posterior and therefore pushing would be difficult. Finally at 9:52 I was given the go ahead to push. 5 contractions and 10 minutes later Liam Lucero was born at 10:02 on July 4th.

When he came out Gabe and I were both concerned because the cord was around his neck, he wasn't crying and he looked so blue. After what seemed like too long he let out a good cry and everything checked out fine.

Gabe and I both laughed right out loud when they told us that he weight 8 lbs 10 oz since that was the exact weight Miles was when he was born. I guess my babies just need to cook til they're nice and huge.

Miles was so excited to meet his little brother and has kissed and loved on him everyday since.

We are so happy that Liam has joined our family. We are so grateful that Heavenly Father has blessed us with another sweet spirit to watch over. Oh, thank Heaven for little boys!
