HELP! Being a new mom (or expectant new mom) is scary and I don't know what babies need. I need some advice about the things that we absolutely must have and the things that we can live without for a while. I also need help knowing which brands are good and in which instances knock off brands work just as well. Oh yeah, and any books that you've read that have helped. I've heard a lot about "Babywise" does anyone know if it's any good? Time is ticking - we only have 15 weeks 'til this sweet little guy joins our family and all we have is our car seat!

You MUST have diapers and wipes! (I know it seems obvious, but just covering the bases). You must not waste time with a wipe warmer--terrible shower gift I got, just dries out your wipes and makes your kid freak out when you are away and use cold wipes. I have a copy of Babywise that I will give you. It's okay, I didn't really use it much but I have a sister-in-law that thought it was great. I'll think of more and tell you later.....
We use the general idea of babywise with Eden and used it with William too. It works wonders. The book is a little strict on what you can and can't do, and on making your baby cry themself to sleep through the night. We weren't that strict,we just use the basic schedule: Feeding, Awake time, Sleep. Always in that order except in the middle of the night when you just feed and put them back to bed. The schedule seems to be a good thing for babies. You don't need a swing. they are nice, but they grow out if it fast. I would reccommend a boppy pillow, Dreft detergent (1 bottle is usually enough, my kids have sensitive skin, they both got rashes in the hospital) This could end up being a really long reply. Maybe you should just tell me what you are thinking about getting, and I will recommend the best products...:)
Sorry, you got me thinking, so I better write this one before I forget to tell you. You don't need nursing garments. Just buy the carinessa, or cotton round neck in a size larger than you already have. I didn't like the nursing ones very much.
I agree with Michelle on the nursing garments, but I have told you that.
Hmmm True about the swing thing, they don't use them for long...atleast Jace didn't. A seperate changing table or a changing table that is a dresser. I just used the dresser in his room and put that pad on...hated it! The ONLY stuff I would even bother on name brand is for me personally #1 Pampers diapers, I love them! #2 Carseat. Everything else can be knock offs work just as good usually. The only book I read was "The baby whisperer" We used some of her tech. for Jace to sleep, she is pro not being so dang strict which I liked. You can borrow it if you'd like. YOu let me know what you are in need of ok?! That way when the baby shower time comes I have a gist of what to get you and baby! ") See you Friday yay!!!!
I thought of a bunch last night, so here are some more... I'm sure I have more as well...maybe I'll just write a few as I think of them. I agree with Bethany on the pampers. They are definitely the best, especially when they are tiny and everything leaks out of the diaper with cheap diapers. Not worth it in the middle of the night when you have to change their clothes, sheets etc. I love Costco diapers when they get a little bigger. Don't get a bassinet, just use your crib, you don't really need a stroller till they are about 6 months. You should get a Baby Bjorn Active carrier instead. Don't buy a cheap carrier, Baby Bjorn Active is the only way to go. we should get you one of those for your shower it is seriously the best thing I ever bought for a baby. Check them out at babyswede.com and let me know what color you like, I'll see if a few people want to go in on one for you. I like having a sleep postioner to help them feel secure while they sleep. And I already told you this, but Lansinoh is a must if you will be nursing. You only need it for the first few weeks but it is a lifesaver. (I'll get you some) Anyway, those were the one's I thought of last night. Love ya!!
I agree with the baby Bjorn. I absolutely love mine. I don't know what I would do without it. We went for a jogger stroller as well instead of the regular one so that I could run and lose the baby weight. Definately get the Lansinoh and don't worry about the nursing garments. All very good suggestions. I hate the nursing garments too. Baby monitor will be a must but you won't need it until you are ready to move him out of your room. I think everyone else pretty much covered everything else. I will let you know if I think of anything else as I am cleaning Bryson's room.
I would definately start buying diapers in bulk. I really liked Pampers Swaddlers when they were little or Luvs. If you are buying a pump I really like my Medela double electric pump. Don't go cheap on a pump. They are worth the extra if you will be working at all or needing to pump on a regular basis. I wouldn't worry about the nursing garments as much as the nursing bras. I would get good nursing bras for sure. And one more thing, I really like the Medela steam bags that you can use in your microwave to sterilize everything from pump parts to pacifiers to bottles. They work great to sterilize pump parts at work. They are about $5 at Target for a set of 5 that you can use each one about 20 times. Someone said they sell them at the hospital too. Well, if I think of anymore I'll let you know.
Sarah,
I would recommend a bouncy/vibrating chair. When my kids had colic or other stomache issues the chair came to the rescue. It would stop their screaming easily. Also, Lansinoah(can't remember spelling) nursing pads are great. Buy quality nursing pads because other wise you'll end up wet all over. We also ditched out changing table after the first baby. We were rarely by it, and it was much easier to change them on a bed or on the floor. Gas drops are another gem for newborn babies. My babies also needed Dreft laundry detergent, I highly recommend it. Avent bottles were the ones that gave my babies the least gas. And don't skrimp on a cheap pump. Your pump is going to become your best friend when you want to go out with your hubby anywhere. As far as diapers go, get lots and lots now. We used the cheap generic diapers during the day, and pampers at night because they don't leak through. That way they don't ruine all their clothes with newborn poop! I'm so happy for you. You'll make an amazing mother!
